National Blood Donor Month

Give blood. Don’t wait for a disaster. Someone needs blood now! Contact the American Red Cross or your local blood bank for more information.

Use #NationalBloodDonorMonth and #GiveBlood to share on social media.

Here are some of the biggest reasons for giving blood is so important.

  • About 36,000 units of red blood cells and 7,000 units of platelets are needed every single day in the U.S.
  • The most requested blood type by hospitals is type O. This kind of blood can be transfused to patients of all blood types, so it’s always in great demand and very short supply. Only 7% of people in the U.S. have type O.
  • A single-car accident victim may need up to 100 pints of blood to survive.
  • About 6.8 million people donate blood every year in the U.S.
  • 38% of our population is eligible to donate, but less than 10% actually do.
  • Donating blood is a simple, safe process. All you have to do is register, take a mini-medical history test, donate, and then accept free refreshments like water, Gatorade, granola bars, etc.
  • A single donation from a single patient can help more than one person.

How to Promote Blood Donor Month

1. Invite the Give Blood trucks to your school throughout the month.

2.  Invite the media to cover the seminar.

3. Offer a tuition discount to families of first responders.

National Healthy Weight Week kicks off annually during the third week in January.

The observance aims to reinforce healthy eating as a way of life instead of dieting to lose weight.

It also provides tools to help establish healthy relationships with food, a positive body image, and approaches to improving healthy habits.

It takes time – more than a week, certainly – to make a permanent, lifelong change. However, it is possible. We’re all different.

Depending on our personality, breaking or making a habit can take days or months.

One thing is sure, you have to keep trying or the changes will never stick.

  • Visit your physician and set goals.
  • Start slow. Try changing one thing at a time.
  • Whatever you choose, drink lots of water.
  • Add fruits and veggies.
  • Reduce or eliminate sugar.
  • Reduce or eliminate refined carbohydrates.
  • Add a cardio workout – walking is one of the best exercises anyone can do.
  • Include a weight or resistance workout (such as yoga).
  • Keep your servicings small by using small plates.
  • Get plenty of rest.
  • Find a buddy. Making these changes with someone helps you stay committed

Ways to support Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

1. Offer free fitness kickboxing classes during the week.

2.  Invite a media personality to take the classes as well.

A Community-Wide Strategy To Fight Against Human Sex Trafficking

(National Day of Human Trafficking Awareness is January 11 as designated by the United States Senate in 2007.

In 2010, January was designated as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Month.)

Although slavery is commonly thought to be a thing of the past, human sex trafficking still exists today, globally and throughout the United States, when traffickers use force, fraud, or coercion to control other people for the purpose of engaging in commercial sex.

There were an estimated 4.8 million victims of sex trafficking worldwide in 2019, and the United States of America leads all other nations in driving demand – meaning citizens of the United States are purchasing sex in greater numbers than any other nation.

The TraffickingFree Zone program is a county-wide initiative focused on reducing the demand – the number of buyers – for sex-trafficked victims.

County-by-county the TraffickingFree Zone program is implemented in collaboration with community members and leaders, law enforcement, businesses, schools, healthcare organizations, churches and the media.

The focus of the program is on arresting and prosecuting sex buyers instead of the victims who are being sold, educating people on sex trafficking and implementing numerous other demand reduction techniques including technology and research components.

When these sectors are activated and working in unison for a one-year period, the TraffickingFree Zone community can expect to see a significant decline in demand.

Ways to support Human Trafficking Awareness.

1. Invite local LEOs to give a seminar on HT.

2.  Invite the media to cover the seminar.

3. Become a Human Trafficking Free Zone by following these instructions.

4. 60% to 70% of trafficking victims come from child social services or the foster care system.

Reach out to the most vulnerable population, children in the foster care system, and offer to speak and/or teach self-defense to these kids.

National Random Acts of Kindness Day

The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation celebrates Random Acts of Kindness Week.

The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation is an internationally recognized non-profit organization founded upon the powerful belief in kindness and dedicated to providing resources and tools that encourage acts of kindness.

Some of the organizations supporting the observance include:

Ways to support Random Acts of Kindness Day

  • Make a note to do nice things throughout the day. Are you looking for ideas? We’ve collected a few that will get you started.

  • Pay for the coffee or meal of the person in front of you in line.

  • Leave a kind note for someone, no explanation needed.

  • Share words of encouragement. You never know who might need them.

  • Put your skills to work for someone in need. For example, offer to create a résumé for someone seeking a new job.

  • Drop off a load of groceries at the local food pantry.

  • Mail a “thinking of you” card to someone you’ve not to talk to in a while.

  • Order a bouquet of flowers to be delivered to anyone in the hospital. That means, call the florist and tell them to pick a hospital or nursing home and deliver flowers to the person the front desk thinks needs it the most. It could be a sick child, an elderly person with no family or college student down on their luck.

  • Send a thank you note to the local fire department, police departments or any military personnel.

  • Just smile.

Safer Internet Day

Safer Internet Day brings tools, education, and awareness to create a safer internet for both kids and adults.

From cyberbullying and identity theft to fraud and human trafficking, the internet can be a frightening place.

Safer Internet Day and ConnectSafely.org aim to make the internet a better place.

The day brings organizations and individuals together with the common goal of reaching as many internet users as possible and provide them with the tools and resources to keep them safe.

Every day, we all face the potential of becoming a victim of internet crimes. However, there are ways to protect ourselves and to teach our children how to correctly use the internet, too.

Ways to support Safer Internet Day

1. Host a Safer Internet seminar.

2.  Invite the media to cover the seminar.

3. Use #SaferInternetDayUS to share on social media.

Every day in the United States, approximately 2,300 people are reported missing.

However, anyone making the report, waiting at home for their loved one or actively looking for them, those numbers no longer surprise.

When such a large part of our lives goes missing it leaves a profound void. It’s not a fillable space. Those who have experienced it, those who report 2,300 missing people per day, know.

Everyone has a friend, mother, sibling, child, neighbor or coworker they see every day.

No one expects to have them mysteriously and with no explanation to disappear from their lives.

It’s a challenging thought. One so difficult to contemplate, it makes it hard to attract the attention of those unfamiliar with the missing person to become involved.

It won’t happen to me.

We often think it won’t happen to us. When a person goes missing, it can be an adult as often as it is a child. Women disappear more than men and seniors are at risk, too.

Health risks, natural disasters, unplanned circumstances, and of course, those who are taken against their will fall into the list of statistics. They can all apply to us.

Ways to support National Missing Persons Day

1. Invite local families to a free anti-abduction seminar at your school.

2. Contact youth-oriented organizations and offer a free anti-abduction seminar.

3. Invite the media to cover the seminar.
