Savate (French pronunciation:  [saˈvat]), also known as boxe française, savate boxing, French boxing or French foot fighting, is a French combat sport that uses the hands and feet as weapons combining elements of English boxing with graceful kicking techniques.

The Bystander Effect

The bystander effect was coined by psychologists when, in 1964, Kitty Genovese was stabbed to death outside her apartment while bystanders who observed the crime did not step in to assist or call the police.

The bystander effect is when the presence of onlookers are less likely to intervene if there are other witnesses who might step in instead.

This is HUGE today because onlookers often watch the event unfold through the lens of their phone which provides another layer of detachment.

The bystander effect is the perceived diffusion of responsibility. One person will not intervene because no one else has intervened.

In Genovese’s case, each onlooker concluded from their neighbors’ inaction that their own personal help was not needed.
