History: American Kickboxing

American Kickboxing

In 1974 Mike Anderson created the Professional Kickboxing Association (PKA).

PKA World Championships aired on ABC in 1974 as the highest rated program of the season. It also created the sports first superstars in:

Americans

Joe Lewis won Heavyweight

Jeff Smith won Light–Heavyweight

Bill “Superfoot” Wallace won Middleweight

Mexican Isais Duenas won Lightweight

After the show aired ABC informed Anderson they would not produce another show because the sport lacked “grass roots” such little league or pop warner football.

Anderson sold his shares to his partners that day for $1 and set out to create the grass roots programs ABC said the sport lacked.
